The season opens with works by Schumann, Shostakovich, Boulanger and Franck. Schumann’s shifting emotional landscapes and Shostakovich’s more austere musical language create strikingly different accents. Boulanger’s music adds another dimension to the programme, while Franck contributes his sweeping Romantic breadth. Together, these works present cello and piano with a wide range of challenges: carrying a melody forward, acting as a counterpart, and developing a musical idea together.

Anastasia Kobekina is equally at home on the modern cello and the Baroque cello. Bach and works written especially for her illustrate the breadth of her repertoire. She is joined by Natalia Grines, whose artistic focus lies in chamber music. The two musicians share a long-standing artistic partnership and performed together at the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition. Their duo draws on the musical understanding and familiarity that have grown through years of collaboration.
