The Calefax Reed Quintet is the world’s first permanently established reed quintet and remains stylistically influential to this day. Five musicians from the Netherlands—on oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet, and bassoon—merge into a warm, unified sound and switch instruments, evoking a Baroque ensemble, a string quartet, or even a big band. Since there is hardly any original repertoire for this instrumentation, they create their own arrangements and perform with an electrifying stage presence.
